Yarn Along

Recently, I finished a cardigan for me. Only the loose ends are left and I need to sew on the buttons. This step is crucial for my handcrafted projects, sometimes it takes weeks to do it...

On my needles is also a cute dress for my daughter. A mixture of the eli dress and the flora dress. I needed to stop knitting it as I ran out of yarn - again...

So it was time to start something new. And as I was asked by my son when I will knit something for him again, I looked out for a nice hoodie pattern. There are some really nice patterns at http://www.mamaknit.no but in the end I decided to knit Side Squiggles incorporating the really cool dragon or dino spikes of this sweater. 

What I really love about a new project is that I can always learn something new. Here it is especially the nice front pocket, something my son will love, I absolutely sure =)

The next picture was taken at the playground while the children played really nice together. This doesn't happen very often and I enjoyed the moment even more and soaked it all in for the unpleasent situations down in grey november ;-)

Winterschaf - Yarn Along

 Some time during winter I started a big project. A sweater for my husband was on my list for some time now. I had in mind I stripy sweater out of undyed yarn. That sounded really appealing to me, plus I had the ok or better the full support of my husband. He really enjoyed it that I will be knitting something for him. Never before did I start such a big project. My sister gifted each of my children a hand knitted Flax sweater from Tin Can Knit and I decided to try this as well for an adult. 

I ordered my undyed yarn at Finkhof Wolle in the colours light grey and grey-brown. The gauge was a bit different and I had to calculate a bit. At the time I was starting the sweater a dear friend wrote something about knitting two-coloured. I was reading it curiously, wanting to knit that way for a long time. So finally I decided to spice up the stripes with a pattern. Oh I had so much fun, creating the pattern and knitting it. In the beginning it was really awkward but little by little I was doing better. I was knitting frantically, it was such a joy. When knitting two-coloured I am holding both colours with my left hand and take the different yarns alternating.

My plan was to finish it in the autumn, so there was plenty of time. Instead as I was having so much fun knitting it the sweater was finished already two months later. Record time for me!

It suits my husband nicely and he is really satisfied with his winter-sheep pullover. And ask me! I am more than satisfied with it. Such a nice pattern and what a joy to knit two-coloured.

There was a fun episode while knitting it. I am freezing a lot in the winter time and for some reason don't have too many jumpers which are really warm. So at some time while knitting the pullover it came up my mind that I would need such a pullover as well. Isn't it obvious that I need it? I definitely need one as well. It already assumes a definite shape. I fancy with the pattern Anna's Lopapeysa. For the yoke I have some of my plant-dyed yarn in mind. The rest will be undyed white or light grey yarn. Wouldn't it be great to have such a wooly, warm sweater in the winter days? Oh yes!

I am still knitting the sweater for my husband and am nearly finished. Only a few centimetres are left and I am very satisfied with it. So he can soon wear it in the warm spring air.

I am still knitting on the jumper for my husband. To be honest, I am knitting furiously on it in the evening hours. It is now two weeks ago, that I started it. The yoke is finished and I am working on the body now. I am so glad that the jumper grows so fast and I am so happy to try the two-coloured knitting. It makes so much fun. One pattern-part is already done and I have to say that I am a bit proud. It looks so pretty, though it is a quite simple motive. I just scrolled around a bit, to find a simple yet nice little pattern to use. A second pattern-part is planned, the rest will be plain light-grey. Let's see whether I can keep the - at least for my part - high speed.

Pattern: Flax from tincanknits, it is raglan from top to down, so the sweater on the picture is upside down.

After starting the summer jacket for me, I am already on to a new project. A big one! I startet a jumper for my husband. Never before did I knit on such a large project. I am using undyed Finkhof yarn in the colours light grey and grey-brown. The natural colours are really nice and I would like to try some two-coloured knitting. The pattern is Flax from tincanknits. It is growing quite fast up to now. My goal is to finish it as soon as the next autumn/winter comes. So I have plenty of time.

After binding off cuffs in the same golden colour as my new hat, I am on to a new project. A little bit too fast maybe as I neither blocked or washed the cuffs yet nor did I sew in the threads. Well, it is just too tempting to start something new.

Last summer I was longing for a lightweighted cardigan to wear over summer dresses in the chilly morning. I decided for the Fox Jacket from Drops. I wanted to use the proposed yarn but wasn't really convinced by the colours. I finally decided for moss green and green and left out the glitter.

I stopped the work on my "golden autumn leave hat" to start a pixie hat for a new little one of a friend. If a friend gives birth to a new baby we usually gift them with a woolen, knitted pixie hat, breastfeeding tea for the mama and coffee pralinees for the papa. Everybody for their needs :-)
During the weekend I had a lot of knitting time surprisingly, so the little hat is nearly finished already. Only one row is missing before it is knitted together. I use this pattern.
By the way, the wool was once gifted to me by Fräulein Rucksack. It is wonderful purple, soft Merino Yarn. Two or three babys were able to wear this yarn already and the small doll of my son got some pants fromt his wool as well. Thanks a lot for this wonderful gift!!

I am still knitting the foliage hat or as I call it "The golden autumn leave hat" for myself. The colour is just what I need during the evening on the couch. It is so bright and shining. The first row of leaves is already complete and I am making good progress. I also enjoy reading a "chart" for knitting. For me it works faster than reading the written abbreviations. The pattern is nice and I got the flow of knitting it finally, which means that I know what probably will come next. This makes it much easier and I do not have to concentrate that hard.

After finishing the hat for my goddaughter I cast on a new hat. And finally this hat is going to be for ... me! All my family members have about two knitted hats, a lot of fresh babys wear a pixie hat I knit, it's only me who does not have any hat! So finally I cast on the Golden Autumn Leave hat for me. The yarn is Karisma from Drops in the colourway dark mustard. It is the first time that I read a knitting chart and it makes so much fun. It feels a bit like decoding and makes me wanting to reach the next line. It is also the first time for me to knit such a difficult pattern with abbreviations like C2BD I have never heard. Up to now I think there was no mistake. But I have to concentrate really hard...

When I am knitting there is not much reading for me. It is either knitting or reading for some time. Nevertheless I watched "The World According to Garp" lately on TV. I like the books of John Irving, especially "Hotel New Hampshire" or "Garp" and it was much fun to see the movie. Well, apparently half of the story isn't much fun and I was surprised by the end of the movie. Does the story end like this in the book? I have to look it up. The most memorable sentence of the book didn't appear in the movie: "Children of wrestlers have a strong neck. The neck of Walt wasn't strong enough." I have to think of this sentence often. It touches my heart.

And of course "The big undertoad"!

Watching the movie felt a bit like fast-forwarding the book.

Fresh back from vacation I did cast on for a new Quynn hat. It is one of the rare patterns I payed for, but it is really, really worth it. During vacation I knitted a Quynn for my son and he suggested to use pink, rose and lillac yarn. It is already finished and he likes wearing it. Knowing that my 5 year old goddaughter loves these colours as well I started a hat for her too. These few rows are the result of one hour knitting. I wonder how some people manage to knit the hat in four hours.

We have been away for some days to the sea. I left the quite big cardigan at home and took a brand new project with me. I cast on a wonderful, light summer shawl. I always adored those kind of shawls at others peoples projects. While being at the sea I read "Karitas" by Kristin Marja Baldursdottir, a wonderful story about a woman on Iceland.

Während wir im Urlaub an der Ostsee waren, habe ich die Strickjacke für Le Petit zu Hause gelassen und stattdessen ein sommerlich, luftiges Projekt mitgenommen. Einen wunderschönen Sommerschal habe ich angeschlagen. Solche Tücher habe ich bei anderen schon lange bewundert. Schön, dass ich nun auch endlich mit einem beginne. Das Muster ist ganz, ganz einfach und deswegen prima geeignet zum Zwischendurchstricken. Außerdem habe ich auf Anraten meiner Schwiegermutter das Buch "Die Eismalerin" von Kristin Marja Baldursdottir begonnen zu lesen. Eine Geschichte über eine junge Frau auf Island. Leider habe ich es nicht zu Ende lesen können und werde jetzt mal bei uns in der Bibliothek danach suchen.

I am still knitting on the cardigan for my son. I am not one of the fastest knitters and am always surprised and impressed how much others can knit in a week or a night. I finished the second sleeve and half of the raglan. Now the rows begin to become shorter and shorter and I love it when a knitting starts to fly at the end =)

 Further, I am not reading a lot these days. Now and then, I take a look into "Baby years" by the switzer physician Remo Largo.

I stricke immer noch an der Strickjacke für Le Petit. Hab ich schon erwähnt, dass ich nicht der schnellste beim Stricken bin? Ich bin immer wieder überrascht und beeindruckt, was andere in einer Woche oder an einem Abend schaffen. Beide Ärmel sind fertig, genauso wie die Hälfte des Raglan-Teils. Die Reihen werden jetzt wirklich merklich kürzer und ich liebe es, wie man am Ende nur noch so durch fliegt =)

Außerdem gibt es ein Bild von den wunderschönen Maschenmarkierern, die mir meine Schwester gebastelt hat. Ich liebe ihre glänzende, fingerschmeichelnde Oberfläche, ihr Aussehen, ihre Haptik. Danke!

Zum Lesen komme ich auch nicht so richtig. Ab und an werfe ich einen Blick in "Babyjahre" von Remo Large. Ich lesen ungern Erziehungsbücher, da ich sonst Bedenken habe, nicht mehr aus dem Bauch heraus entscheiden zu können. Das Buch jedoch geht vom biologischen Standpunkt an die Entwicklung von Babys heran und hat mir schon in einigen Dingen die Augen geöffnet.

The Quynn of the last time is finished and I am knitting on the cardigan for my son. I chose BabyDROPS 20-16 with the size 3/4 years and soft cotton yarn. Instead of buttons I want to sew in a zipper. I also did not reduce the number of stitches at the body having the little belly of Le Petit in mind. I wonder how I will do the raglan part with my number of stitches (did I mention that I never knitted a raglan? uhuu...). At the moment the body and one sleeve is finished. Oh and I worked out to knit while walking. So I can carry my baby in the sling, go for a walk and knit at the same time =)

The book from John Irving I wrote about last time was brought back to the library without finishing reading it. I thought it wasn't worth my time. Instead now I am reading "Soundtrack of my childhood" by Jan Josef Liefers, a german actor who used to live in the GDR. It is quite interesting but not terrific.

Die Quynn-Mütze vom letzten Mal ist fertig und ich wende mich wieder der Strickjacke zu, die ich für Le Petit stricke. Ausgewählt habe ich BabyDrops 20-16 in der Größe 3/4 Jahre. Dazu eine schöne weiche Baumwolle, auch von Drops. Die Farben sind nicht ganz jungstypisch, aber mal was anderes. Anstelle von Knöpfen möchte ich einen Reißverschluss einnähen. Außerdem habe ich die Abnahmen am Körperteil nicht berücksichtigt. Die Jacke auf dem Foto von Drops sieht relativ schmal aus, wenn ich da an Le Petits kleinen Bauch denke... Naja, mal sehen, wie ich das dann mit dem Raglan-Teil mache, wenn ich jetzt mehr Maschen habe (öhm, ich habe sowieso noch nie Raglan gestrickt...). Im Moment ist der Körperteil und ein Ärmel fertig. Ich hoffe aber, dass der andere Ärmel schnell wachsen wird. Ich habe nämlich herausgefunden, dass ich im Laufen stricken kann. Ich nehme die Kleine ins Tuch, gehe raus zum Spazieren und kann dabei stricken =)

Das Buch von John Irving habe ich ohne es zu Ende zu lesen wieder in die Bibliothek gegeben. War einfach zu langweilig, dafür ist mir meine Zeit zu schade. Stattdessen lese ich jetzt "Soundtrack meiner Kindheit" von Jan Josef Liefers, der in meiner Stadt in der DDR aufgewachsen ist. Sehr interessant, haut mich jetzt aber auch nicht vom Hocker.

At the moment I am finishing the Quynn hat for my son. It is the first time I have a Noro yarn in my hands and as a friend wrote to me, it is the correct yarn to fight winter depression. Though, this year we do not really have any winter here. The two, three centimeters of snow already melted again, while parts of Austria is drowning in snow. I would like if there would be some kind of winter in February to go bob sliding with my kids. Well, with my son, rather. The hat is almost finished, but I guess it should be worn during the first cold days of spring.

For the reading I have a book of John Irving in my hands. It is the novel "The fourth hand". Normally, I do not try to read more than one book of an author. If I really like a book of a specific author, usually I am disappointed by another one of the same author. There are a few exceptions. John Iriving is one of them. I read "Hotel New Hampshire", "The world according to Garp" and "Last night at Twisted River". I liked each of those. I appreciate how Irving forms his characters and the relationships among them. So I did not hesitate, when I saw "The fourth hand" at the library. Nevertheless, this book is a big disappointment. I dislike the way of telling the story in a retrospective way, the characters are boring up to now and the story - well which story? I will see, whether the book will change at some point.

Im Moment bin ich dabei die Quynn-Mütze für meinen Sohn zu beenden. Dabei verstricke ich ein Noro-Garn zum ersten Mal. Eine liebe Blogleserin meinte, dass das das Garn ist, um Winterdepressionen zu bekämpfen. Hm, allerdings haben wir dieses Jahr ja gar keinen richtigen Winter. Die zwei, drei Zentimeter Schnee, die letzte Woche fielen, sind schon längst wieder weg, während Österreich im Schnee ertrinkt. Hoffentlich bringt der Februar nochmal ein bisschen Schnee, damit wir rodeln können. Die Mütze ist fast fertig, allerdings soll sie erst in den ersten kalten Frühlingstagen getragen werden. Für Winter ist sie mir ein bisschen zu dünn.

Ansonsten lese ich gerade den Roman "Die vierte Hand" von John Iriving. Normalerweise lese ich nur ein Buch pro Autor. Wenn mir ein Buch eines Autors sehr gefällt, bin ich von einem anderen desselben Autors meist enttäuscht. Dabei mache ich allerdings einige Ausnahmen. John Irving ist einer der Ausnahmeautoren. Von ihm gelesen habe ich "Hotel New Hampshire", "Garp und wie er die Welt sah" und "Letzte Nacht in Twisted River". Jedes einzelne hat mir sehr gut gefallen, weswegen ich nicht gezögert habe, als ich "Die vierte Hand" in der Bibliothek sah. Allerdings ist dieses Buch eine große Enttäuschung für mich. Die Art und Weise, wie er die Geschichte rückblickend erzählt, sagt mir einfach nicht zu. Die Charaktere sind komisch und langweilig und die Handlung - nun ja, welche Handlung? Mal sehen, ob sich das Buch vielleicht noch ändert.

So, this is the first time I want to join the Yarn along organised by Ginny.

At the moment I am knitting a Quynn hat for my boy. The pattern appeared in my blog visits quite often and I liked it from the first moment. Nevertheless, I am not used to knit with english instructions. Now, I finally bought the pattern and luckily got some help from Svenna, whose Blog I also got to known via the Yarn along. She also recommended to use youtube for the knitting abbreviations which is a great hint.

The yarn I am using is Noro Silk Garden. I fine mixture of silk, mohair and wool. The colours are wonderful and I hope that my boy will like the hat.

Last week I finished reading "The girl who saved the king of sweden" by Jonas Jonasson. I had a great time reading it. The first part was totally hilarious, though during the second part it got a bit too absurd. After finishing I directly lend it to my mother, so there is no picture.

So, jetzt möchte ich das erste Mal an Ginnys Yarn along teilnehmen. Im Moment sitze ich an einer Quynn Mütze für Le Petit. Die Mütze ist mir schon oft aufgefallen und lange bin ich um das Strickmuster drumherum geschlichen. Englische Anleitungen habe ich noch nicht benutzt und ich traute sie mir nicht ganz zu. Letztens Endes habe ich jetzt doch zugeschlagen und glücklicherweise Hilfe von Svenna bekommen. Ihren Blog habe ich im Übrigen auch über Yarn along kennengelernt. Sie gab mir auch den großartigen Tipp sich die Anweisungen auf Youtube anzuschauen (dass ich da nicht selber drauf gekommen bin...).

Das Garn ist Noro Silk Garden, eine wunderbar verführerische Mischung aus Seide, Mohair und Wolle (war nur ein bisschen teurer als das reine Wollgarn, da hab ich doch lieber das weniger kratzige genommen, außerdem war die Farbe schöner). Die Farben sind wunderschön, bin gespannt, wie sie als Mütze wirken werden.

Letzte Woche habe ich das Buch "Die Analphabeting, die rechnen konnte" von Jonas Jonasson beendet (Über seine Namensgebung wundere ich mich immer wieder). Das Buch war klasse. Der erste Teil sehr lustig und überraschend, der zweite Teil war dann für meinen Geschmack ein bisschen zu überzogen und absurd. Ansonsten ist es aber sehr zu empfehlen. Nach dem Lesen habe ich es direkt weiter an meine Mutter gegeben.
